- Painting over wall panelling/Cleaning cement before relaying carpet

Dear Shell,

A while back on your radio program you mentioned how to paint over wall paneling. This is an old house and all the paneling is probably a veneer and the color is dark. I would like to know the steps that you recommend to paint over the paneling and achieve an interesting texture to the room. Also, in our house we are ripping out the carpet and underlay in a guest bedroom where the floor is concrete. This room has a very strong cat urine smell. I would like to clean the cement and seal it before we relay the underlay and carpet. I would very much appreciate your suggestions for eliminating this odour. Thanks Shell for all of your good advice and we enjoy your program and your friendly manner.

Thanks, Irene

Dear Irene,

Regarding painting your paneling these are the steps to follow: Wash the walls with the Shell Busey Home Cleaning formula & Rinse well Using a pure bristle brush apply a coat of fast dry alkyd primer to the grooves and then use a roller to apply it to the flat surfaces Tint the primer to the same shade as your finish coat Allow to dry for 3-4 hours Apply finish coat of acrylic latex using a polyester paintbrush and paint roller Regarding the urine odour: Remove all the carpet and underlay Acid wash the floor using a 2/3 water and 1/3 muriatic acid mixture Rinse well Wash with the Shell Busey Home Cleaning formula Rinse well and allow to dry Seal the floor using a solvent based concrete sealer Apply new underpad and carpet.

It's just that easy.
