- Refinishing a bathtub

Dear Shell,

I would like some information on refinishing a bathtub. I have heard that a tub can be refinished instead of replaced. As well, I would like to know if a tub surround can be put in over the existing wall board. In our bathroom, the wallboard has a tile like finish but was glued directly to the wall. My fear is that we will have to gut the entire bathroom and I really would like to avoid that. The wallboard around the tub has started to deteriorate but it is fine in the rest of the room. Also, what type of paint is best to use for the ceiling of a bathroom?

Thanks, Patty

Dear Patty,

1.To paint your tub use the product Klenks Tub & Tile epoxy paint. It comes complete with a preparation kit. Apply two coats 8 hours apart using a whizz roller. Apply the first coat lengthwise and the second coat across the tub. Take all items that produce dust and lint such as toilet paper out of the bathroom before painting the tub.

2.Backing board in the shower area must be replaced if it has deteriorated. Apply new Denshield board to the wall for backing then you can apply new tileboard with butyl two sided tape.

3. To paint your bathroom ceiling use a good quality kitchen and bathroom paint.

It's just that easy.
