- Adding insulation and vinyl siding to existing cedar siding

Dear Shell,

I am adding additional insulation and vinyl siding to my house. It is about 35 years old and currently has cedar siding which is in very good condition (has been painted regularly over the years). Is it necessary to remove the existing siding before adding the insulation and new vinyl siding, or can it be just added on top? The installer suggested he would add it on top and move/adjust the windows out to be properly fitted with the new siding. Your comments would be appreciated.

Thanks, Marlene

Dear Marlene,

I can't agree with your contractor. The best way is to remove the wood siding and apply a minimum of 1” Cladmate Styrofoam insulation or any of the other similar products. Then apply your vinyl siding over top. You may have to adjust your window exterior casing a bit but not like you would by going over top of wood siding.

It's just that easy.
