While you're thinking about your lifestyle remember that not all gas fireplaces are created equal. There are many different types. Some are mainly decorative by design and use of these types should be limited to when you want to sit and enjoy the flame – not for heating.

The more efficient gas fireplaces use heat exchangers to warm room air and project radiant heat into the home. They also have controls that allow you to regulate the flame size to avoid overheating the room. These can be cost effective for zone heating for those portions of the home where you spend the time. By setting your furnace thermostat to lower temperatures in less used areas of the home you may be able to conserve on overall gas consumption.
