- Painting linoleum floor

I cannot afford to replace my lino floor just now. I have heard that it is possible to paint over top of lino. Is this possible?

Tip:

Vinyl or linoleum floors can be painted but it is not recommended for heavy traffic areas such as laundry rooms or kitchens. Generally OK in bathrooms as most traffic is in socks or slippers.

Procedure:

First scrub the area with my home cleaning formula or trisodium phosphate (TSP) using a pot scrubber pad to ensure all wax or any other residual is off the floor. Rinse with cool water and allow to dry over night. There should be no sign of glazing on the floor, it should be dull. If not dull rub very lightly with 200 grit sandpaper (Caution: do not use steel wool as particles may be left behind and rust in the water base finish).

The first coat must be an acrylic latex Porch & Floor paint. This can be tinted to your background colour. Apply two coats with minimum 8 hours drying time between coats.

To add pattern or other colours stencil or faux finish using water based urethanes such as Flecto Varathane Diamond Colours. Allow 8 hours to dry. Any number of colours can be used to create your own pattern. (Do not try to put two colours on at the same time as if you make an error it is easy to wipe off the wet colour).

When you have completed your creation apply two coats of clear water based Urethane either in semi-gloss or gloss such as Flecto Diamond Clear Finish or Benjamin Moore Stays Clear allowing 8 hours curing between coats.
