- Alieviating annoying sounds from the toilet |
Dear Shell, I have a sound something like a howl in my water system. I believe it comes from the toilet. It usually stops when the toilet is re-flushed. I have reached into the tank and cleaned out under the rubber ball valve and this seems to help for awhile. There is usually a slight flow of water from the tank into the toilet. Should I change that ball valve? Thanks, Jack Dear Jack, We call this the moaner. Remove the toilet tank lid. Shut the water supply off under the toilet tank and then flush the toilet to empty the tank. Reach in with your left hand and grasp the rod holding the float and slide it up tight to the filler valve. With your right hand grasp the rod and slide it up tight to the ball float. Now bend the rod approx. ¼” inch. This puts more tension on the float thereby shutting the water off quicker. Turn water on to fill the tank and flush. It's just that easy.
